Acer AOD250-1633 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - Up to 9 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)
Acer AOD250-1633 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - Up to 9 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) Review

I bought my netbook primarily for travel. I need to store my photos onto a hard drive, and then have the ability to back them up to my Western Digital hard drive. Internet access and email were my other basic needs. And it was never meant to replace my notebook.
The netbook is as per the positive reviews and Acer specification - a great little netbook and oh so light! Perfect for travel. I know I am going to enjoy this machine. Small and light.
However, this is what I want to share, in an effort to avoid others from getting the anxiety attack I almost went through. My netbook arrived within two days, with a smile as wide as the box it came in, I can leave for Europe in 2 days worry free.
But suddenly, I sat glazed at the screen, getting ever more anxious as I downloaded the only software I had to have.
I needed to download my camera’s software utilities that will allow me to transfer photos from my camera to the netbook for manipulation (I have a canon EOS40D DSLR - software is called DPP). Of course this is why I bought the Netbook. But it didn’t install! The minimum screen resolution for the canon software has to be 1024 x 768 pixels. The netbook screen resolution is at 1024 x 600. No workarounds after web research either. Who ever heard of a minimum screen resolution requirement?
However, I did find a simple solution. Attach your camera via the USB port and a driver will automatically install and then you can download your photos, even when shot in RAW. Phew! I can still go overseas. Why did I ever worry. That was too easy!
To be safe I also downloaded Google’s Picassa picture manager which works well with the downloaded photos. When I get back home I will transfer the photos to my laptop for further editing using Canon’s utilities. No problem there.
The next heart palpitating moment was to set up my VPN so I can communicate with the office. I could not do it. Windows 7 Starter does not support that feature. Now you start to get into the limitations of Windows 7 starter. Looks like I need to upgrade, drats I didn’t factor that. … 2 hours later I found a gem of a feature .. select Start from the toolbar and enter ‘VPN’ in search for programs and files .. it allowed me to setup a VPN connection. Then I searched for remote desktop and I was able to login to a remote pc! Yeah - I am really good to go.
My advice is to check the real purpose of what you want to do, check and make sure the software you want will support the netbook and its operating system. I have never come across a screen resolution limitation before, but then again, I never had a small screen. The netbook is not a laptop and therefore has design constraints, but it is extremely well designed for its intended purpose.
Regarding memory, I have the standard 1GB. I downloaded the CPU gadget meter to test memory usage. My memory while writing this is at 62% (only Google’s Chrome browser is running). Next I loaded Internet Explorer and the memory is at 68%. Loaded iTunes and it is at 73%. Unless memory exceeds 100% utilization for most of the time, I suspect I will not upgrade.
